Promoted to Major 9/16/1776. Promoted to Lt. Colonel in Jan 1780 and Commander of SC 5th Regiment. Regiment disbanded on February 1780, he was sent home. After Fall of Charleston, went to NC with Marion in July 1780. In Col. Archibald McDonald's Kingstree Regiment 1780-1781. Feb. 1781, he was authorized his own troops - Horry's Light Dragoons (militia). Oct. 1781, Marion authorized to raise 2 regiments of SC State Troops, Horry commanded the SC 4th Regiment of State Dragoons.
